Polio Virus has been Confirmed for the Fourth time in Lahore this Year

The presence of the virus has also been confirmed in Dera Ismail Khan. The National Emergency Operations Center has confirmed type 1 wild poliovirus in environmental samples from Lahore and Dera Ismail Khan.

According to the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), samples were collected from Lahore on November 17 and Dera Ismail Khan on November 19. These samples were sent to the Pakistan National Polio Laboratory for testing.

According to NEOC, presence of type 1 wild polio virus has been confirmed in both cities.

This is the fourth confirmation of wild polio virus from Lahore this year, while the first positive sample from DI Khan, however, the results of genetic sequencing of environmental samples are awaited.

The NEOC says that type 1 wild poliovirus, found in Afghanistan and Pakistan, is a very fast-spreading virus.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only 2 countries in the world where polio has not been controlled so far. Many cases of polio have been recorded in the country this year as well.
